Having recently upgraded to Mavericks, the following message was appearing on starting the computer: “WD SmartWare: This version of WD SmartWare is not compatible with this version of OSX. (It has been moved to the Incompatible Software folder). Visit ).” That website refers to PowerPC applications, of which, presumably, WD SmartWare was one. I, therefore, downloaded the up to date version of WD SmartWare, having read that this would fix “an issue related to reports of some customers, under certain conditions, experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9)”. (I did not want to find my other two older WD drives losing information. Neither of these has been connected since moving to Mavericks).

Downloaded WD App Manager, which does a For a while the WD worked automatically ( I didn’t have to do anything) when I bought my Mac few years ago. Then it stopped working, and Time Machine says the drive is unavailable. Accessing the digital media stored on your WD external hard drives directly from your Windows 8 Start screen is now easier than ever. With just one click of our new WD app, all your content is instantly displayed and organized so you can easily browse your photos, watch your videos, play your music and share it all with friends and family.

The new version of SmartWare seemed to enable me to backup my computer to a WD external drive. Opening it pulled up the WD SmartWare tabbed window and it went through the process of seemingly reading the hard disk and providing a graph-like readout of the different types of files. However, this was superfluous to me as I run Time Machine to a WD 1TB Studio external HDD, which is always attached to my iMac. I decided to uninstall the SmartWare app and have checked that this no longer appears in my Applications folder. However, occasionally, a WD SmartWare icon will appear on my desktop for no reason, and not immediately after starting the computer. Since supposedly “uninstalling” the app, clicking the icon results in a window containing seven items – DriveUnlock.app, Extras folder, User Manuals folder, Virtual CD Manager.app, WD SmartWare folder, WD SmartWare.app and a ‘What is this.html’ file.

Also, from a reply to a query regarding WD drives on an Apple forum, it was suggested that if “com.westerndigital.WD-SmartWare-Installer.plist” was present on your computer, then “you are using problematic utilities”. This plist was found on my computer after following the explanation in that forum reply to use Finder’s Go menu, then Go To Folder and typing /Library/LaunchDaemons in to the field provided. Additionally, each time the computer is opened up, an error message now appears - “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer” – and two options are given, “Ignore” and “Eject”. Clicking either seems to have no effect other than to clear the error message – until the next time. Could this be a connected problem as it never used to occur prior to installing Mavericks? So, three questions: • How do I find where WD SmartWare is hiding on my machine, and how do I go about getting rid of it? Cdg burner for mac. Is it simply a matter of moving the icon/window to Trash?

• Should I get rid of “com.westerndigital.WD-SmartWare-Installer.plist” and, if so, how? • What could be causing the “. Disk not readable ” message?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks for your prompt reply. I have been reading articles regarding the WD problems and loss of data which is why I made the post. My problem is I cannot trace where on my computer the SmartWare app is located - certainly not in the Applications folder. It is only when the SmartWare icon decides to show itself on my desktop can I open the window showing the seven items mentioned, SmartWare.app being one of them. At the present time the icon is not available to me but, once it decides to show itself again, I will be deleting all of them. By asking the three questions detailed I was hoping I could be pointed in the right direction to do this sooner rather than later.
